Roy Hill and Drag Racing. To mention one without the other is to do a grave injustice to both the man and the sport. A legend for more than 30 years, Hill’s resume includes 16 IHRA National event victories, 36 final round appearances, Ownership of the 1995 IHRA Pro Stock Championship team, founder of the acclaimed Roy Hill’s Drag Racing School and induction into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame.
A true "rags-to-riches" story Hill grew up in a small North Carolina town. What he lacked material possessions, he made up for with determination and drive, putting him on the fast track to success. Acquiring many of his racing skills and techniques from "The King" of NASCAR. Richard Petty, Hill learned from the best, how to be the best. Only one week after his first race, driving his 1969 Roadrunner in a local drag racing event, Hill jetted into the highly competitive Super Stock class, quickly dominating the Carolina and Virginia asphalt.
Throughout the 70’s Hill joined forces with Petty Enterprises. Steering the Plymouth Pro Stock to numerous victories, he competed in IHRA and NHRA national events, divisional and regional events and countless match races.
In 1989, Hill’s desire to promote the sport, nurture budding talent, and hone the skills of already established drag racers inspired him to found Roy Hill’s Drag Racing School. Under his tutelage, professional drag racers such as John Force, Warren Johnson, Darrel Alderman, Cristen Powell and Doug Herbert flourished, and newcomer Ritchie "The Kid" Stevens, a true Roy Hill protégé, nabbed the record as the youngest ever to capture a Pro Stock national event and took home the title of "Rookie of the Year" in 1996
The year 1999 marked yet another milestone in the history of Roy Hill as he unveiled the Roy Hill’s Driving Experience. Businesses of every type and size have taken advantage of the word, "teamwork." An excellent way of thanking hardworking employees, rewarding loyal customers or entertaining current and potential clients, the Roy Hill’s Driving Experience ensures that participating companies are both never forgotten, and spoken of often.
For 2003 Roy Hill embarks on a journey that will both highlight, and culminate a legendary career. Hill plans on competing on the NHRA AMS Staff Leasing Pro Modified Series tour. Using the skills and knowledge that have made him the driver and teacher he is today. Hill plans on ending his driving career with a farewell tour and a National Championship.
